Indian Railways takes a tough stance for ‘Swachh Bharat Mission’! More often than not we find people spitting betel saliva on railway platforms and railway premises. Even the strict penalties imposed by Indian Railways have failed to check such annoying practice. The Western Railway has started a drive to make passengers aware about the ills of littering in railway stations. Taking forward Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Swachh Bharat Mission’, Central Railways has reminded passengers that tourists from different countries visiting India travel by trains. The citizens from foreign countries get a “wrong impression” about the country when they see unclean and stained platforms and trains, the Western Railway zone said.
“Why let our guests judge us! Please do not spit ‘Paan’ anywhere inside station premises. It leaves a wrong impression on our guests from foreign nations, tweeted Western Railways.” Talking to Financial Express Online, a Western Railway official said that Indian Railways slaps a fine of up to Rs 500 for such acts. Indian Railways has a stringent Penalties for Activities Affecting Cleanliness at Railway Premises Rules 201 under which a fine can be slapped for spitting at the railway station, defacing rail properties, littering rail stations, cooking, bathing, urinating and feeding animals. However, the fervent appeal made by the Western Railway aims at instilling civic sense and also shows that pride of the country is at stake.
In 2015, cases were slapped against over 1,300 persons under Section 198 of the Railways Act by Western Railway for spitting. A total of Rs 1.17 lakh were collected as fines. The figure went up in 2016 as Rs 3.11 lakh were collected as penalty. In 2017, Rs 3.92 lakh were collected by Western Railway, according to a report.
Last November, South Eastern Railway (SER) started a two-day drive to check spitting. Passengers, who were caught littering in station areas, were penalised Rs 100 in Howrah and Santragachi railway stations. The authorities said that such drives to discourage passengers from littering station areas would continue at other stations under the SER.
