block station is a station (along with its signalbox) associated with one end of a block section. Each block section has a block station at either end; the block stations control access to the block in either direction. A halt station is a station that is not associated with the end of a block section and has no associated signalboxes and no role in controlling the entry of trains into a block section. These usually serve for picking up or dropping off passengers, etc. at intermediate points in the middle of a long block section. The train proceeds on the flag or lamp signal given by the guard of the train; the duration of the halt is prescribed in the working timetables.
