Central Railway (CR) authorities have decided to stop charging Re 1 from commuters for using the urinals installed at CR stations, a practice which began in 2016.

“We have stopped charging Re 1 for urinals from majority of stations,” said SK Jain, Divisional Railway Manager (Mumbai), Central Railway.

The stations on CR on the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) – Kasara/ Panvel/ Karjat routes have a total of 117 toilet blocks with urinals. According to sources, of these only 36 urinals have been built and are looked after by contractors, are charging Re 1. These are the toilets and urinals for which the contract is continuing. They shall stop charging Re 1 once it ends. Passenger associations have been demanding for the charge to discontinued for a long time. “People are buying tickets so the railways should make provision of maintenance and upkeep of urinals from this money. Many a times the contractor used to fleece people by overcharging,” Lata Argade, president, Tejaswini Mahila Pravasi Sanghatana.

Meanwhile, Shiv Sena MP Arvind Sawant on February 15 in the meeting with CR demanded toilets inside the women’s compartments of local trains.
