Action to Conserve and Protect the Environment Must Start at an Individual Level – Shri R. Dhananjayulu, AGM, SCR

South Central Railway observed the World Environment Day today i.e., 05th June, 2024. Shri R. Dhananjayulu, Additional General Manager, SCR was the chief guest o­n the occasion. Principal Heads of the Departments and senior officials participated in the program. Shri C. Shekar Reddy, Vice President, Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) and Shri Saurav Choudhury, CII-IGBC also graced the occasion. World Environment Day is celebrated o­n 05th June across the globe; this year’s theme is “Land Restoration, Desertification and Drought Resilience”.

Shri R. Dhananjayulu, Additional General Manager, SCR stated that the action to conserve, preserve and protect the environment must start at individual level. He called upon the Railway staff to implement environmental friendly practices from their homes. He also emphasized o­n the importance of cleanliness and encouraged the Railway staff to regularly participate in cleaning activities of their surrounding areas such as Railway colonies and offices. The additional General Manager informed that Railways has been continuously undertaking various measures towards environmental sustainability such as Rain water harvesting, rejuvenation of water bodies, energy conservation, Afforestation, Bio-toilets etc., He stated that in addition to implementing these facilities, it is also important to ensure the maintenance throughout the year.

Further, Shri R. Dhananjayulu advised the officials to undertake special drives to spread awareness among the local public to prevent them from dumping garbage or lighting fires near Railway lands/tracks. He advised the field level supervisors to strictly monitor Railway lands and other Railway premises to prevent such activities. The additional General Manager informed that it is important to spread awareness o­n the importance of green environment and clean energy to create a better life for our future generations. The measures taken towards a greener environment should become a way of life and not just a o­ne-time thing, he said. The way to protect our environment is to reduce, recycle and optimize resource utilization, he added.

Earlier, officials from different departments such as Mechanical, Electrical, Engineering And Medical etc. presented detailed reports o­n their contributions and action plans towards sustainability of the environment.Shri Saurav Choudhury, CII-IGBC also gave a detailed presentation o­n building a sustainable future and the scope of green living. Shri C. Shekar Reddy, Vice President, IGBC appreciated SCR for its efforts towards the protection of the environment.

Some measures undertaken by SCR towards sustainability include planting of 73 lakh sapling during 2023-24; near 100% electrification achieved; development of green buildings; installation of plastic bottle crushing machines at 76 major Railway stations across the zone; 23 Waste to compost plants have been installed; CCTV monitoring of cleaning activities is available at 58 Railway stations;63 stations have been certified with ISO:14001 certification; Sewage treatment plants have been made available at 15 Railway stations; Door to door collection for garbage disposal at Railway colonies; Waste segregation, treatment and recycling at Railway Hospitals among other measures. South Central Railway has also undertaken Special cleanliness drive as part of World Environment day from 17th May to 07th June, 2024.

Additional General Manager presented mementos to winners of drawing competition o­n the theme of “Land Restoration, Desertification and Drought Resilience” for the children of Rail Nilayam employees as part of the World Environment event. Shri R. Dhananjayulu and other senior officials also participated in the signature campaign.

 Earlier, Smt. Jaya Varma Sinha, Chairperson, Railway Board presented awards to South Central Railway, South Western Railway and North East Railway at a program held in Rail Bhawan, New Delhi for their exemplary performance during Swachhata Pakhwada activities conducted in the previous year i.e., 2023-24.
