There are several locomotives that have been manufactured specifically for other countries, or rebuilt and then exported, sold/resold, or otherwise given to other national railways by Indian Railways, such as the many YDM-4’s sold to Bangladesh, Vietnam, Myanmar, Togo, etc. Many of these are in active use on those railways. However, it is often hard to get accurate information on locomotive numbers and their current disposition.

Mick Pope posted the following to the IRFCA mailing list in July 2008:

The Summer 2008 edition of the Continental Railway Journal contains the following news reports of exported YDM-4 and other stock which may be of interest to IRFCA members.

Mali – noted December 2007. YDM-4 6370 carrying plate ‘Refurbished at Central Workshops Goldenrock Indian Railways Oct 2006’ hauling 10 2nd class coaches with plates ‘Built at RCF Kapurthala 2006’. Paint scheme dark and light blue [I assume they had plenty of those colours handy!]. Loco and stock work Bamako to Kayes. The stock and loco are linked tp tradsitional stock by a special wagon with central coupling at one end and a double buffer at the other.

It is also reported that another 4 locos plus 28 coaches have arrived at Dakar in Senegal for use between Bamako and Dakar. It is said that the locos are not YDM-4s but new locos with 12c cylinder V engines rated at 2300hp.

Tanzania – 10 YDM-4, classed 73R in Tanzania, haul the majority of trains west from Tabora to Mwanza, Kigoma and Mpanda. Locos are maintained by RITES under contract with expatriate Indian staff. Locos are reported to be very reliable – 9 of 10 in service. 23 second hand coaches on order from India.

Togo – YDM-4 in dark and light blue colour scheme numbere CC 1201to 1209 but also carry their original IR numbers. Numbers noted are 6544,6652,6541,6631,6585 and 6548.

Angola – Indian built [Chennai] DMUs, 15 in all now in service [arrived January 2008]. Two sets of 6 for passenger service and 3 forming a self-propelled accident relief train.
